Sir Edward 'Weary' Dunlop was given the name "'Singa yang diam" by the Ambonese soldiers of the Netherlands East Indies Army.
Donald Stuart wrote about it in an article and said "Weary Dunlop of the great heart and soft voice was, is and will ever be 'The Quiet Lion' in the hearts and minds of all who knew him in our three and a half years of suffering ..."
Our site at Weary.QuietLion.com.au (still under construction) is dedicated to telling the multi-faceted life of 'Weary' Dunlop - his childhood, his care and devotion to his fellow POWs, his work as a surgeon, sportsman, Ambassador (unofficial) for Australia, his great compassion, sense of humour, and his lasting legacy.
We encourage Diggers and those who have walked the Trail to add their thoughts and memories, and those who just simply wish to comment on any of the stories, to join us there.
You will find links to other resources including some great books that have been written about 'Weary' and others who experienced this hellish time in our history.
So please visit and help us build this interactive site by adding your comments, experiences and images.
